  • Introduce plasticene projects
  • Show Gr.5/6 picture books and plasticene illustrations
  • Show steps in organizing project - handout
  • Show plasticene technique. Review foreground, middle ground and background theory

Make and Take Plasticene Art Samples

  • Make a sample nativity scene and put in frame provided
  • Make a plasticene page from a picture book of their choice and glue it into the shadow box provided

Wax Resist - Van Gogh's “Starry Night”

  • Discuss painting “Starry Night” referring to art resource
  • Make a mini version of “Starry Night” using technique
  • Show Halloween Pattern Story (ex. On Monday, I saw one ghost, On Tuesday, I saw two spiders…)

Colour Theory

  • Discuss Primary, Secondary and Tertiary colours and colour wheel and their place in the environment
  • Food colouring and water mixing experiment
  • Make coffee filter butterflies
    You can turn the coloured filters into a butterfly, turkey or flower

  • Discuss warm and cool colours and refer to art samples: Halloween Silhouette, Serengetti Silhouette and Van Gogh's Sunflowers

  • Discuss pointillism technique
  • Make a sample picture using a theme of your choice (ex. Fall, Remembrance Day, Winter, Spring, Summer, Religious)

Charcoal Drawing

  • Discuss technique and drawing medium
  • Make a sample picture with a Remembrance Day theme

Day 2

9:00 – 9:20 Networking by Grade/Division (share ideas)
9:20 - 10:20

One-Point Perspective Drawing

  • Review foreground, middle ground, background and horizon line
  • Create a landscape picture following one-point perspective technique (can also be done on paper or foam plates)
  • Show techniques for drawing nature objects and shading techniques

Still Life Drawing

  • Draw samples of fruit
  • Draw a still life composition
  • Discuss contour, shape, colour and texture (using vocabulary and drawing techniques)

Sketching (go outside)

  • Using charcoal, sketch a tree (Alfie's Long Winter, Science)

  • Make a leaf rubbing collage (Alfie's Long Winter, Science)

  • Show “All About Me” photo collage (Write a biography)
  • Make 2 mosaic pictures using fun foam and mosaic squares

Sand Painting

  • Discuss how to make coloured sand
  • Make a picture with coloured sand (Egyptian and Native Symbols)

  • Describe foil sculptures (ex. Dragon, human)
  • Demo clay pot techniques = pinch pot, coil pot, slab pot and tile
  • Make a plasticene sculpture (ex. Totem Pole, clay pot, tile, sculpture)

  • Discuss types of lines in art, the world and show Math links
  • Show a sample tepee (Science: Structures, Social Studies: Native People)

  • Make a “Scratch Monster” (Halloween Stories)
  • Discuss texture and line
  • Show how to create a 3-D display of this artwork

Day 3

9:15 - 9:45

Painting on Aluminum Foil - Winter Theme

  • Show examples of student artwork done on foil and describe the different ways to add snow in a 3-D effect
  • Paint sample snow scene on foil. Use with any snowman or winter story
9:45 - 10:20

3-D Newspaper Tree & Tissue Paper Tree

  • Show the story “The Name of the Tree”
  • Make an Ungalli tree with tissue/crepe paper and fruit loops

Writing links - write connections: Text to Text, Text to Self, Text to World, story elements, favourite part etc. on leaf, roots or branches

  • peruse resources and picture books on display
10:45 – 12:00

Paper Bag Princess

  • Watch play on cd
  • Review handouts, organization, characters
  • Discuss props, scenery, costumes
  • Make samples of podium cloth, dragon skin, dragon claw, world, paper bag costume etc.
  • Review sound effects

Sound Effects

  • Dragon burning up forests with fiery breath (exaggerated inhale and exhale)
  • Elizabeth knocking on the dragon's door (woodblock and mallet)
  • Dragon flying around the world (“Woosh” sound by cast)
  • Castle being smashed by dragon (hit a drum with a mallet)
  • Dragon tired and then asleep (dragon characters snore while asleep)
  • Fire burns up forest (scrunch a bag or paper to create crackling sound)
